Sex-Toy Hygiene: How to Clean and Store Your Toys
Cleaning toys properly helps prevent irritation, bacterial growth and STI transmission. Because materials and electronics differ, always check the manufacturer’s instructions first.
Clean Before and After Use
For most washable toys:
-
Rinse away lubricant and body fluids.
-
Wash with warm water and mild, unscented soap.
-
Rinse thoroughly so no residue remains.
-
Allow the toy to dry completely before storing it.
Never submerge a motorised toy unless it is labelled waterproof. “Splashproof” does not mean it can safely go underwater. Keep charging ports and battery compartments dry.
Some non-motorised silicone, glass or stainless-steel toys can be sanitised more thoroughly, but only boil or place a toy in a dishwasher when the manufacturer specifically confirms it is safe.
Avoid Damaging Products
Do not use bleach, alcohol, heavily fragranced soap or other harsh cleaners unless the care instructions allow it. These products may damage the toy or leave residue that irritates sensitive skin.
Inspect toys regularly and replace anything that becomes cracked, torn, sticky, discoloured or difficult to clean.
Sharing and Switching Body Parts
Wash toys between users or cover them with a fresh condom, replacing it between partners. Never move a toy from the anus to the vagina without thoroughly cleaning it and changing the condom.
Porous materials can hold bacteria even after washing. Using a condom over them can reduce risk, although replacing them with a non-porous option is generally easier to manage hygienically.
Store Toys Properly
Once completely dry, keep each toy in its own clean pouch or container. Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, moisture, dust and extreme temperatures. Separating toys also prevents incompatible materials from damaging one another.
Remove disposable batteries before long-term storage and keep chargers with the correct toys.
Good toy care is simple: clean before and after use, dry thoroughly, store separately and follow the product’s instructions.
